What is SBR technology? How does the SBR system work?

What is SBR technology?

The SBR technology is a common and widely used water treatment system. Also known as Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) water treatment systems, these are highly powerful and efficient water treatment systems. SBR water treatment systems are widely used because it is a proven technology which has minimal to no maintenance thus becoming cost-effective.

To talk about some of the distinct properties, Biological processes and high-quality product generation are two of the prominent factors which make SBR water treatment systems stand out from others.

Earthlink technologies have slick designed SBR water treatment systems which are designed to deliver high output while being energy & cost efficient.

How does the SBR system work?

The SBR process is a widely accepted and used water treatment method in developed countries. It has also gained popularity in countries like India & China in past years.

To talk about its working method, The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a fill-and-draw activated sludge system for wastewater treatment. In this system, wastewater is added to a single “batch” reactor, treated to remove undesirable components, and then discharged. Equalization, aeration, and clarification can all be achieved using a single batch reactor. To optimize the performance of the system, two or more batch reactors are used in a predetermined sequence of operations. SBR systems have been successfully used to treat both municipal and industrial wastewater. They are uniquely suited for wastewater treatment applications characterized by low or intermittent flow conditions.

Thus a complete cleaning process in an SBR water treatment system can be classified into the following six steps :

  1. Filling
  2. Aeration
  3. Settling
  4. Decanting
  5. Idling
  6. Sludge Wasting

Sludge wasting is an important step as it determines the quality of the cleaned water. Two parameters namely Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) & Mean cell residence time (MCRT) are adjusted to keep better control over the quality of sludge wasting.

Now that we have understood the working mechanism of SBR water treatment systems, let’s have a quick look over the use cases and applications for the SBR water treatment systems.

Following is a list of applications/sites where SBR water treatment systems can be implemented and used:

  • Bungalows & Farm Houses
