The source of the wastewater affects its makeup. Common components of domestic sewage and municipal wastewater include pathogenic microbes, biodegradable organics, nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), suspended particles, and potentially carcinogenic chemical substances. Heavy metals, suspended particles, and increased levels of organics (such as BOD, COD, and TOC) are typically present in industrial wastewater.

A number of microorganisms can be used physiologically to reduce dissolved and particulate biological oxygen demand (BOD) and stabilise organic materials in water. They are in charge of oxidising the dissolved and particulate carbonaceous organic materials into new biomass and mineral elements of CO 2 and H2.
