Maintain the cleanliness of the sensor chamber (the easiest way to do this is to vacuum it out every time you change the batteries). If the room where you want to install the smoke detector is particularly dusty, install an ionisation fire alarm to protect it from the dust.

Most new electronic fire alarms come with logic boards that tell the alarm to chirp when the battery runs low. Sadly, changing the battery does not always stop the chirping! To ensure that the smoke detector works properly, you may need to press the RESET button.

Power to the fire alarm has been disrupted – a power surge may have disrupted power to the fire alarm, causing it to chirp when power is restored. The problem should be resolved by pressing the RESET button.
